NYPD vs. FDNY in Sports and Athletics

While they both perform invaluable services, the NYPD and the FDNY have a friendly rivalry that transcends their regular duties and spills its way onto sports and athletic competition. The long and storied connection between these two departments also means that there are many sporting events that have a long history and some that are even sponsored by the city of New York. In the following article, Disqualification Appeals New York will detail some of the most important sporting events that the two departments hold for charity and bragging rights. Continue reading for more.

FDNY vs. NYPD Hockey Game

Hockey is a great spectator sport and even more entertaining when there are two teams that have a burning desire to beat each other. One of the most popular events that the NYPD and FDNY hold is their annual hockey game. In this event, both departments send their finest hockey players to play a match in UBS Arena, which is the home of the New York Islanders in Madison Square Garden. There have been 47 hockey games between the FDNY and NYPD, with 26 wins for the fire department, 18 for the NYPD, and 3 ties.

NYPD vs. FDNY Football Game

This on-field rivalry dates back to the early 1970s and is one of the most intense sporting events that the fire department and police departments participate in. The idea of a football game being played between the two departments dates back to when two police officers and firefighters got into a debate about the sport at the Mariner’s Inn in Brooklyn. The full-contact nature of the sport makes it a physical and engaging viewing experience. The FDNY has dominated this competition, claiming 23 wins to the NYPD’s 11. This match is played on Mitchell Field, which has been used as an infantry training site and military facility used by the Air Force in years past. This location has a rich history because it is a stone’s throw away from Roosevelt Field, which is where Charles Lindbergh started his historic flight to Paris.

FDNY vs. NYPD Baseball Match

As America’s pastime, it is only right that two of the most important departments in the United States play a baseball game. The baseball game between the NYPD and FDNY is usually hosted in a historic baseball field like Citi Field Stadium or their minor league affiliate’s stadium. All of the proceeds for this match are donated to charity.
